MARGETSON CUP 1950-51

Winners-DRAKE.

The scheme is as follows 60 points are divided among the four Houses for work the division depending upon the classification by letter of every boy in the House in Final Form Order. So a boy who secures an A scores 5 basic points. When these basic points are totalled, the 60 ultimate points are divided in the correct ratio between the Houses. For instance, in 1951 the basic points for work, based on Final Form Order, were Arnold 186, Drake 205, Scott 203. Wren 105. which gives a total of 789. In the final calculation therefore, Arnold are given ultimate points out of 60 in the ratio of 186 to 789. which amounts to 15.1 or just above a quarter share. The same division of ultimate points is made in the other forms of competition, but the totals are Football 15, Cricket and Athletics 10 each and Swimming 5, so that the totals for work and other activities are 60 and 40.

The final result was -

Drake 29.37 Wren 26.96

Arnold 22.53   Scott 21.15

To summarise, Scott were first for work, Drake for Foot-ball and Athletics, Wren for Cricket and Arnold for Swimming.

The past year cannot go down in the records of Arnold House as one of the most successful in sport or work, but it can be said that great efforts were made by the majority and that enthusiasm was present throughout the year.

Consequently, although our only Championship was that of Swimming, we seldom if at all, appeared fourth in the House Com-petitions. It is worthy of mention here, with regard to Swimming, that it was the extremely good work of our Relay team -P. Coleman, I, Rogers, E. Mills and D. Elliott, which won us the Swimming Championship.

Although we have lost a number of stalwarts, we hope with the advent of new blood in Form I, that the present year will find Arnold rising again as Champion Mouse. This occurred previously in 1949, so that our turn is about due again. Every member counts in this competition of work and sport-so play hard and work hard and make this Arnold's year.

A word of welcome to the new boys, who joined the HOUSE at the beginning of the year with the hope that in due course, they will prove their worth in the classroom and on the playing field.

The House was ably led by Ireland and Clarke and an excellent team spirit was noticeable during the year. House Meetings were on the whole interesting and enjoyable, but there is still a need for boys to put forward and carry out suggestions themselves-

The House is to be congratulated on winning the Margetson Cup. this achievement being mainly due to successes in sporting activities. From the work point of view, Ireland, Clarke and Lodge were successful in the General Certificate of Education. Although scoring the largest number of any House in school-work, Drake was fourth on account of a greater number of boys than any other House.

Drake again won the Football and Ireland is to be congratulated on playing for the County XI, The following boys played for School Teams:-Ireland, Clarke, Amos, Slatter, Stratford, Coombes, R. Mills and Guy.

In Athletics, Drake were well in front on Sports Day although the Juniors did not score a single point. Ireland and Clarke were joint Senior Champions and Stratford was Middle Champion. Stratford also did well in the County Sports at Bristol and the All-England Sports at Southampton.

In Cricket, Drake tied with Scott for second place. Ireland and Say had trials for the County XI. The following boys played for School Teams:- Ireland, Say, Slatter, Hart, Bennett, R. Mills, Russell and Niblett. In Swimming, Drake was second in the House Champion-ship, the result depending upon the last race.

The results, published elsewhere, of House football. cricket and sports tell the story of Scott House in detail. May we therefore speak in general terms? Four members played in the 1st XI (Football) R. Vick, A. Hodges, J. Stock-well and D. Fowler, who with Berry formed a stout nucleus ; but it was not quite enough to hold the stars of other houses. The Cricket XI bowled fairly well, with Wilks taking most wickets, but the batting was very fragile. The effort we made on Sports Day was good. With no stars we finished third. It was perhaps the best performance of our year because we struggled hard to win 2nds and 3rds. The Swimming was sad; we won a single pint. being naturally fourth in total result.

Finally came the disappointing news that we were fourth for the Margetson Cup. This was particularly surprising. because the House had been fourth in one department only-swimming. The many small margins, in our favour, were blotted out by this one lapse and the fact that each House had at least one strong section. The House nevertheless made the others fight to win their points, which is a good omen for

After 30 years as Housemaster of Wren House, Mr. Pratt has retired from his duties, having given most valuable service in the establishment of the House. This is to be seen in the records of the House, both in the Field of work and sport. The ' Margetson Cup' has been awarded 24 times since it was presented to the School. We have been Champion House 13 times, including a tie with Arnold in 1947. The longest

consecutive run of successes was 8 times for the years 1925-1937 inclusive.

In Swimming we have not been in any way out-standing, as since the institution of the Shield, it was not until 1950 that we managed to win. Unfortunately in 1951, with a strong team our Captain was debarred from competing by doctor's orders, and we could have retained the Shield if we had won the last event, the Relay Race. Even then it is safe to say that we should have been top with S. King's service.

So much for the past. Now what of the future? It would be fair to say that with the mixed talent in all fields, we should maintain a good standard set by the past. Our regular Wednesday House meetings bring us a great variety of talks and discussions with the general business of selecting and reporting on the House teams. A small dramatic team has been started in the Junior section of the House, and it is hoped to present some short well rehearsed, if not lavishly staged productions. With such a range of activity, opportunity is offered to every boy still to further the prestige and well-being of Wren House.
